| I know it is not unusual to get the occasional L-144 with an odd dark colored patch, I've heard of and seen photos of several. The photos were of adult or near adult fish, not young fry, though I had thought that those dark mis marks would develop at around the same time a normal brown BN would develop color, when they are little fry.
Several months ago I bought 3 L-144. All of them solid yellow. They are now bristling up nicely, all are male, but one along with the bristles has developed a spot of pigment on the top of his head. It looks just like the photos of L-144 mis marks.
My question is for those of you who have breed L-144; if you had any mis marks at what age did the color develop?
Mis marks are not rare, but if you have good stock I don't think they are an everyday occurrence, still if the color develops late, and you sell fry at the usual size, you would never know.
I'm OK with a mis mark, he won't be used for breeding, but cute as an individual. What I'm trying to eliminate is something like melanoma as it seems odd that the color would develop at such a late date. He is active, eating well and the picture of health, at least for now.

| hi amber. i bought some l144 from a breeder who had a few with the mis marks. they were just over the inch in length and she said she was'nt going to sell these on and add them to her breeders?????. the ones i got from her are now 3" plus and not showing any signs of mis marks. ive bred 3 batches from my trio and never had any with the marks on them as yet. seems strange that the mark as come when they are at the sexing stage. i would have thought the mark would be their from being born. | |

| I would have thought a mis mark would appear earlier too, that is appeared at sexing age is what raised the question of some type of melanoma or hormone sensitive cancer to my mind. Which is more what I'm thinking it must be now. Drat. | |

| Deviation Some of the fry I raised were born with a brown spot these appeared either on their back, pectoral fins or snout. I only know of two other breeders who have experienced this phenomenon. After I inquired about this in a foreign forum I got came the confirmation that this has happened to others. It appears the reasons for this is that a single amelanistic male which was exported from Paraguay and was spawned with a normal colour female and later bred back with his own daughters to fix the mutation. Amelanistic' is an absence of dark colored pigments that results in a tan / yellow colored fish (as in L144) with normal coloured eyes.
Now after eight spawns of this pair I would say they are rather easy to spawn, just as easy as the regular Ancistrus spp.
There is further information on this species on the Cat-eLog page. found this on shanesworld on planet catfish colin.

| The single amelanistic male from Paraguay was the foundation of the original species L-144. Mine, like most now days are the color morph. Still, the color, mismarks and all should work the same way. All the responses confirm what I had first believed, that any mismarks are apparent early. This means that something unusual or pathological is going on with my fish. | |

| I have a young L144 from a batch of fry that has a solid brown colour on body & the lemon head & tail all of the other fish from the same batch are solid yellow in colour, any marks are noticeable as soon as they are free swimming | |
