Holiday Block Use by?

Hey, My mum was clearing out the garage today, and found some old holiday feeding blocks from the days she kept goldifsh (early 00s). Have they "gone off"? They are the hard chalky type, and two packs of them havent been opened so havent been exposed to the damp (they are in cardboard back, plastic front packaging).

Can they be used still? They would be used for my Pearl Gourami.

I would not use them, although they may appear to be OK you can not be sure. If you placed one in the tank and there was a problem it could alter the water chemistry.

If you want to feed your fish while on holiday then arrange for somebody to feed them or use an automatic feeder. If you have a sitter you can prepare the food in a plastic pill dispenser(the type with the days of the week on) and all they have to do is open the dispenser and put the food in for that day.

Healthy fish can go several days without food so if it's only a few days then they should be OK without.

Avoid holiday blocks all together IMO.

At the end of they day they are substandard food and can foul the water if the fish decide not to eat them. I know the fisrt and last time i used one was about 7 years ago and i swore never again after removing the several dead fish from the tank. they were used to high quality food and either didn't realise the feeder block was food or were opposed to eating it cos it was still fully intact when i got home.
